day and night: red shorts and stripes

The weather in Boston has been hot as balls lately, or if you don’t have balls, hot as the underside of your boob rubbing against an underwire.  Yesterday I saw a window washer who, after washing a window with sudsy water, went back to squeegie it off 10 seconds later but the water had already evaporated.  Yeah, it’s that hot.
While my plight isn’t as bad as a window washer standing on a scaffolding in the sun for 8 hours a day (or however long unions allow them to work in scorching heat), I’m a delicate flower and this heat is just too much for me.  Thankfully, I received a package of shorts from Old Navy’s Stuff and Save sale that I placed last week.  In it were two new pairs of their 3.5″ chino shorts in a reddish coral color and black.  I also got them in yellow but they’re hella see through and even I have standards so those puppies will be returned!  While I love my cutoffs, they’re not appropriate for all occasions so I needed some “adult shorts”, if you can call 3.5″ shorts “adult shorts”.
I love these shorts so hard that I wore them all day to work (I work at home or at Panera or anywhere with wifi) and then all night to meet a friend out for drinks.  I could have changed because they got a little wrinkled but instead ran my straightening iron over them because I’m cool like that.
Here are my two looks for these awesome shorts.  I was feeling the nautical vibe–I’m living in New England after all–and paired it with a chain link necklace and stripes.
DAY
Not pictured are mustard leather flip flops in which I smashed up my toe because I’m a klutz and might now have only 9 1/2 toenails.
NIGHT
I dressed up the shorts for nighttime by pairing them with some awesomely cheap wedges from Target.  If you’re wearing heels, follow the Hemisphere Rule–if you’re baring your legs, keep the top covered, if you’re bearing your boobs, cover them legs!
There’s my day and night look.  Annnnnd now I have the Kid Cudi song stuck in my head.  Awesome.

weekend wrapup: florida

It feels like forever since I’ve blogged!
Last week I left for a trip to Florida with my mother to see my grandmother.  My grandma is 89 and not doing super well so I agreed to go down with my mom to check on things and get a mini vacay out of it.  Despite the pictures, the trip was super stressful and exhausting.  It’s amazing the effects that stress, compounded with car accident injuries, can have on your body.  Yes, I’m totally complaining about a trip to Florida.  Wah!
We stayed at the Colony Hotel and Cabana in Delray Beach.  If you’re ever in the Delray area, I highly recommend this little hotel in the heart of downtown Delray Beach.  It has a bed and breakfast type of feel to it.  It was built in the 1920s and revamped over the years but the architecture of the hotel was really cool.  It even has the original elevator from the 1920s that is staff operated.
My mom and I spent most of the trip shuffling back and forth to grandma’s house and dodging the monsoon-like weather.  We did manage to get 2 hours in on the beach on both Tuesday and Thursday though, which was nice.
The hotel has a private beach and cabana club with a pool.  I found this kitty there and stalked him until I got one good picture of him.  Apparently he’s a stray who calls the cabana club home.   I called him Creepy Kitty and then decided that Harold was a better name. The staff takes care of him and informed me that his name is Dimitri because he’s a Russian Blue (whatever that is, I know nothing about cats).
Butttttt, I still called him Harold because I like old man names for animals.
Without fail, I took pictures of my outfits during the trip.  Unfortunately the lighting was best in the hotel bathroom, so there is a toilet in my pics.  I tried to keep it classy and at least put the seat down.
Once the rain cleared up I had my mom snap a few shots of me.  This is my “oh look, I’m standing on some yellow thing” look, followed by my “draw me like one of your naked French girls” pose.  Thankfully, my mother knows I’m crazy and indulged my antics.
I managed to get a little shopping in at an awesome store called Sequin.  I was a kid in a candy shop in there.  The bracelets were literally overflowing in bowls.  I tried on about 50 of them and came home with two.

By Saturday I was soooo ready to come home.  I’m still dizzy from the concussion and my back is killing me so 5 days of heat and hotels and grandma’s 30 year old couches was my limit.
I spent most of Saturday in the airport air conditioning because my mom likes to sit around and wait 3 hours for planes.  It was cool at least and gave us some time to decompress before coming home.
Like mother, like daughter.
How was your week/weekend?

I’m linking up with Sami for Weekend Shenanigans!

maxi dress, camo, and stripes

Holy hotness today!  It is a blamy 88 degrees here in New Jersey and I’m ready for spring to come back or for the skies to open so that some of this humidity can go away.
Today was one of those days where I stuck my hand out the window and deemed it appropriate weather for a maxi dress with a tank top and a jacket…then as soon as I set up my camera I started sweating like a pig.  That’s when I realized that sticking my hand out the window does not qualify me as a meteorologist.  Turns out people actually go to school for meteorology.  Hmph!
This maxi dress did keep me pretty cool even in the hot temps, however I had completely forgotten about the chub rub that the summer brings.  Probably because last summer I was running and didn’t have any–womp womp 🙁
For those of you unacquainted with “chub rub”, please eat a cheeseburger or thank your parents for superior genetics.  For everyone else, I recommend Body Glide.  It’s amazing during running but works just as well for when your thighs become friendly with each other while running errands as well.  Tip: get the men’s version, it’s cheaper, has no scent, and is easier to apply.

Maxi dress: Love Culture // Tank: Gap // Camo Jacket: Gap // Belt: Joe Fresh // Sandals: American Eagle // Bracelet (really a necklace wrapped around my arm): H&M
Also I’d like to give a special shout out to my Instagram followers who helped me decide on a sandal color today while shopping.  In accordance with the popular vote (and what I was leaning towards), I chose the bronze!  Follow me on Instagram to help me with future shopping indecision.

Is it super hot where you live today?

yellow bubble necklace

I’m linking up again today for 5 Days, 5 Ways with Whitney from Along the Lines of Style.  Today’s theme is accessories and I had a debate with myself whether I should feature my beloved leopard print scarf or my yellow mini bubble necklace.  Despite the fact that I wear my scarf way more than my necklace, the bubbles won out because surprisingly  I have more of pictures of them.

I was originally not sold on the mini bubble necklace but I’m glad I broke down and got one because it’s fun to pair with different items.  I love the fact that even though it’s a statement necklace, it can be paired with almost any color or pattern and still look good.  For those of you wondering, yes, the length of the necklace is shorter in the first two outfits than the last three.  I shortened the necklace with a grocery store twist tie.  It’s a temporary fix for days when I don’t want it as long as the chain hangs.
What’s your favorite accessory?

red skinnies

I’m linking up with Fran from Franish today for 5 Days 5 Ways.  I missed yesterday so it’s really 4 Days 5 Ways for me.
I chose my red skinny jeans because I don’t wear them as often as I should.  I feel like they’re fairly memorable and I’m tempted to only wear them once in a while so that people don’t think I live in them. I did wear them a fair bit over the holiday season though because they’re very fitting with an ugly Christmas sweater and reindeer ears.
Today I paired my red skinny jeans with a striped tunic and motorcycle jacket.  I added these leopard flats (my ultimate neutral shoe) and yellow bubble necklace for an extra splash of color.

Other ways I’ve styled my red skinnies include with a purple tunic (similar), wintery sweater, chambray shirt and printed cardigan (similar) over a white oxford.
How do you style your red skinnies?
